What is the best boon to ask for from God? Is it good to pray to Him with the thought “Oh Lord! Give me what ever you wish for”?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

If God appears before you, do not ask him for wealth, remedy for suffering, power, fame or anything worldly. Also, do not ask him for the attainment of the purpose of life as per Advaita, Vishishtadvaita , Dvaita or such high philosophies.

Just ask him one simple thing. Ask him to give Himself to you. That is the best prayer to ask God.

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Once a king had to complete a project and hence selected 4 persons from his own place to complete the project. They in turn fulfilled the King wishes and completed the project to his satisfaction.

King on a gesture of Love and appreciation wanted to reward these persons and enquired what they would like to ask for…..

The first person wished to have nice roads in his village and immediately the King informed his minister to setright the same

The second person wished that the King give him a bungalow, and the King in turn ordered his minister to sanction one

The third person came and informed king that he wants to marry a rich girl of his choice and the King took responsibility in getting him married to his wishes

And now for the last person, King asked him to inform his wishes; the person said,"O lord:, since you are compelling me, I have one request to you that you need to stay in my house for a month,The king on hearing this agreed to his request and instructed his minister to find out his place and also to fix up the dates.

The minister after collecting his contact details wanted  to make all preliminary arrangements for the kings stay in his house , when the minister visited he realized that this person is staying in a small hut & no proper road to approach  to his residence .

The minister immediately understood that our king cannot travel in this junk road and ordered to lay good Road till his residence, more over he thought that our King cannot stay in this small hut and also constructed a bungalow for that person and also provided enough money, gold, diamond to that person so that he can meet all of the kings requirement during his stay.

Now since this person has become a millionaire a rich man in that village requested him to marry his beautiful daughter

The fact is though the last person just invited the king, he got everything (New road to his village, bungalow, riches and a beautiful rich wife)

Like wise if we invite the God to our heart, all our wishes will be fulfilled and our mind will also be purified.

Because this man has chanted My holy name, My duty is to give him protection

Srimad Bhagavatham 6:2:10

सर्वेषाम् अप्य् अघवताम् इदम् एव सुनिष्कृतम्

नाम-व्याहरणं विष्णोर् यतस् तद्-विषया मतिः

sarvesam apy aghavatam idam eva suniskrtam

nama vyaharanam visnor yatas tad-visaya matih

Simply by chanting the holy name of Lord Vishnu, such persons may attract the attention of the Supreme Lord, who therefore considers, “Because this man has chanted My holy name, My duty is to give him protection.”

According to Lakshmidara Kavi, the pioneer of the Nama Siddhanta tradition, the potency of the Nama Sankeerthanam can be traced to the Rig Vedas.

”Asya jananto nama cidvivaktana

mahaste visno sumatim bhajamahe

By Chanting the Divine Names of Lord Vishnu one can attain the supreme knowledge.

O Hari! O Friend of the helpless! You are the only ocean of mercy! Because I have not met You, my inauspicious days and nights have become unbearable. I do not know how I shall pass the time.

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa used to cry at end of each day that a day has passed with out having the vision of God.

Meerabai suffered without Krishna the way a fish suffers when taken out of water.

I want to see God now! I want to attain realization! Is it possible?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

Yes it is possible. You should do the following things:

1. Forsake all worldly desires

2. Always think about the Lord

3. Develop divine love towards Him above anything else

4. Believe that He is always with you and aware of all your actions

You should attain such a stage that it is impossible for you to live without Him.

God is an ocean of compassion and mercy and love. Love that is shown to Him is reciprocated back multiple fold. If you take a step towards Him, He takes ten steps towards you.

Let God bless you with His darshan soon!

Is there anyone who is merciful, whom we should resort to for protection, other than Him?

दे पूतना विष रे अम्त पायो

Although Putna administered poison (to Krishna) she attained salvation; the Vedas have sung in vain that man reaps as he sows.

King Bali performed a hundred sacrifices and yet was tied up and sent to the nether world. King Nriga donated one lac cows and yet he was turned into a serpent. Friend Sudama was born a pauper and suddenly found himself in a golden palace.

Surdas says: O God, strange are Thy ways, well have the Vedas said, ‘not this, not this’.

Srimad Bhagavatham 3:2:23

अहो बकी यं स्तन-काल-कूटं

जिघांसयापाययद् अप्य् असाध्वी

लेभे गतिं धात्र्य्-उचितां ततो’न्यं

कं वा दयालुं शरणं व्रजेम

Oh, even the impious woman, Putana (the sister of the demon Baka) – who suckled Him (as a Babe) at her breast, which was daubed with a most deadly poison, with intent to kill Him – got Salvation as the return from Him. Is there anyone who is merciful, whom we should resort to for protection, other than Him?

Don’t stop chanting for any reason. The rest of the things will be taken care of automatically.

I have been chanting Maha mantra daily for the past six months. But my sexual desires and arrogance are getting increased. What should I do?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

Continue what you are doing right now. The rest of the things will be taken care of automatically. If possible, increase your chanting.

Once a similar question was asked to Bhagavan Ramana. Bhagavan replied, “If the fort is to be captured, firstly all the soldiers from inside the fort should be allowed to come out and be killed one by one."

Likewise, it is only your Vasanas (impressions) that are manifesting themselves. So there is nothing to worry. However, don’t stop chanting for any reason.

What We Think We Become

Tales and parables by Swami Vivekananda

What We Think We Become

Thought is all important for "what we think we become."  There was once a Sannyasin, a holy man, who sat under a tree and taught the people.  He drank milk, and ate only fruit, and made endless 'Pranayamas,' and felt himself to be very holy.   In the same village lived an evil woman.  Every day the Sannyasin went and warned her that her wickedness would lead her to hell.  The poor woman, unable to change her method of life which was her only means of livelihood, was still much moved by the terrible future depicted by the Sannyasin.  She wept and prayed to the Lord, begging Him to forgive her because she could not help herself.

By and by both the holy man and the evil woman died.  The angels came and bore her to heaven, while the demons claimed the soul of the Sannyasin.

"Why is this!" he exclaimed, "have I not lived a most holy life, and preached holiness to everybody? Why should I be taken to hell while this wicked woman is taken to heaven?"

"Because," answered the demons, "while she was forced to commit unholy acts, her mind was always fixed on the Lord and she sought deliverance, which has now come to her. But you, on the contrary, while you performed only holy acts, had your mind always fixed on the wickedness of others.  You saw only of sin, and thought only of sin, so now you have to go to that place where only sin is."

The moral of the story is obvious: The outer life avails little.  The heart must be pure and the pure heart sees only good, never evil.  We should never try to be guardians of mankind, or to stand on a pedestal as saints reforming sinners.  Let us rather purify ourselves and the result must be that in so doing we shall help others.
