Much more valuble is the hour, consiously spent, in endeavouring for the highest good.

Srimad Bhagavatham 2:1:12

किं प्रमत्तस्य बहुभिः परोक्षैर् हायनैर् इह

वरं मुहूर्तं विदितं घटते श्रेयसे यतः

To a man who is negligent about his own interests, of what use in this world are long years of life that slip away unnoticed (are spent in ignorance) ?

Much more valuble is the hour, consiously spent, in endeavouring for the highest good.

The only certain course for success declared unanimously by all the sages of yore is the hearing, chanting, and meditation of the Glory of the Divine Name of Sri Hari

Srimad Bhagavatham 2:1:11

एतन् निर्विद्यमानानाम् इच्छताम् अकुतो-भयम्

योगिनां नृप निर्णीतं हरेर् नामानुकीर्तनम्

O King! For those devotees who have lost all their attachments to worldly objects, for those seeking salvation from fear and afflictions, for those desirous of enjoying the various fruits of their actions and also for those men of wisdom delighted in themselves (Atmaram), the only certain course for success declared unanimously by all the sages of yore is the hearing, chanting, and meditation of the Glory of the Divine Name of Sri Hari.

And through constant repetition of the Name after the removal of sin, new sins cannot accumulate; just as when the light is kept burning in the room it can never be dark again.

Sridhara Swami commentary on Srimad Bhagavatham 6:2: 16, 17

Through a single utterance of the Divine Name the worst types of sin are immediately destroyed, just as the densest darkness in a closed room is removed as soon as a light is brought to the room. And through constant repetition of the Name after the removal of sin, new sins cannot accumulate; just as when the light is kept burning in the room it can never be dark again.

In this way gradually even the impulses of sins are destroyed and the heart is purified. That is why repeated utterance of the Name has been enjoined in the scriptures at various places as in the passage “those who remember it (the Divine Name) day and night, their sins are utterly destroyed.

Why atonement by Chanting of the Divine Names of God is superior to others ?

Srimad Bhagavatham 6:2: 16, 17

The maharishis who knew the comparative value of penances have laid down hard penances for the atonement of grievous sins and light penances for comparatively lighter ones.

Therefore, its is true beyond doubt that sins of all kinds are eradicated through atonement in the form of penances, charity, fasting and other forms of religious observances.

But when through repeated acts of sin the impulses or Samskaras of sin get deep rooted in the heart, they are not destroyed by ordinary acts of atonement. Even such impulses are totally uprooted by the Chanting of the Divine Names of God.
