One must not waste breath uselessly: whenever one has nothing special to do one should silently practise japa in rhythm with one’s breathing — in fact this exercise should go on continually until doing japa has become as natural as breathing.

Anandamayi Ma

Silent japa should be engaged in at all times. One must not waste breath uselessly: whenever one has nothing special to do one should silently practise japa in rhythm with one’s breathing — in fact this exercise should go on continually until doing japa has become as natural as breathing.

It is of great value to read sacred texts and books of wisdom. Speak the truth. Bear in mind that God’s Name is He Himself in one form; let it be your inseparable companion. Try your utmost never to remain without Him. The more intense and continuous your efforts to dwell in His Presence, the greater will be the likelihood of your growing joyful and serene. When your mind becomes vacant, endeavour to fill it with the awareness of God and His contemplation.

As your heart beats as you sleep, dream or being awake let your tongue always Chant the Divine Names of Hari.

If you become that anxious on forgetting to chant the Divine Name even for a second, then you are blessed.

One should constantly repeat the names of God irrespective of any activity that he might be involved in

We should Chant and remember the Divine Name every breath we intake and we need not try to do anything else.

kalakshebo na kartavyah, kshenamaayuh kshane kshane, yamasya karuna naasti, kartavyam hari kirtanam.

Every moment of your life should be taken as His gift.  Be rest assured that every incident that happens is by His grace and happens for your well-being.

Guru Nanak felt that it would be improper to postpone Nama Smarana or remembering the Name of the Lord, even by a single breath

The thought that seize out one's mind for life long period would surely, strongly surface during the last breath

That unshakable faith in Rama Nama remained with him till his last breath.

The human body is a rare boon to embodied souls and that too is very transient (momentary, short-lived, temporary)

Your last breath should ensure that this is your last birth

The thought that seize out one's mind for life long period would surely, strongly surface during the last breath. Likewise we ourselves can have a test to determine whether it's possible to have an active remembrance of the lord when our soul departs the body.

The person who is on the spiritual path will go on taking His Name with all love and joy.

Swami Papa Ramdas

Japa means constant repetition of God’s Name. The chief condition necessary for Japa Yoga is a keen aspiration to know and realise God. Given this, the person who is on the spiritual path will go on taking His Name with all love and joy. By so doing he will thoroughly purify his mind and make it transparent so that God within him may shine forth and absorb him into His all-pervading, all transcendent Being of splendour, peace, power and wisdom. So, a keen aspiration to realise God is the only necessary condition.

There is no Mantra easier than ‘Tãraka Mantra’. There is no Mantra greater than ‘Tãraka Mantra’.

Nama Article 17th November 2013

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

There is no Mantra easier than ‘Tãraka Mantra’. There is no Mantra greater than ‘Tãraka Mantra’. Worship of Rama earns the fruit of worshipping all devas and devatas. The blessing that one receives on earning the Grace of Lord Rama can never be expressed in mere words. Being aware of the glory of Rama Nãma, our Bhagavãn Yogiramsuratkumar performed incessant chanting of ‘Sri Ram Jaya Ram Jaya Jaya Ram!’ As a result of this how many miracles have been performed by him? While looking into the ‘charitra’ of other Mahans we may find some miracles. But, some awesome feat/miracle have been performed every moment (‘pratikshana’) in the life of Yogiramsuratkumar! He has had astounding feats and siddhis performed. But, all these were done without any publicity! None knew the happenings. One wonders if even the beneficiaries were aware of it! The reason behind this is that he (Yogi) had no thought that he was doing it. He had no desire that others should know them. All that he wished was that his devotees should be protected somehow. Therefore, every moment he has poured forth his Grace (‘krupa’). He was a great tapasvi who suffered for the welfare of the world.

Some ten/twenty years back when I used to visit Tiruvannamali to do ‘Giri pradakshina’, one could have darshan of Lord Annamalai and Abithakuchãmbal in the temple here very easily. Giri Pradakshina on full moon (‘poornima’) is considered highly auspicious. In Ramanasram a warning board used to be placed requesting people to go in group as it was not safe to go alone. But, what do we find today? Lakhs of people come to Tiruvannamalai to do ‘Giri Pradakshina’ on every full moon and it is not very easy to have darshan of Lord Annamalai and Abithkuchãmbal in the temple. It is said that on ‘Chitra poornima’ and ‘Kãrthigai deepam’ there is flooding of people! It was not so in earlier years. What is the reason for the sudden flooding of people in Tiruvannamali? It is because Yogiramsuratkumar sat here and did tapas! Otherwise why should people feel such great attraction all of a sudden? This is the real reason. This is the truth.

I performed 'Girivalam' at Tiruvannamalai this Sivaratri. I chanted Rama Nama all the while, though the fellow-devotees asked me to chant the Shiva mantra. Am I right in doing what I did?

Repetition of a single Name continuously is at once Dhyana, Yoga, Tapas and also illumination.

Excerpts from “GLORY OF THE NAME” by Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

It is always better to repeat or chant only one Name as a spiritual discipline. For contemplation on Saguna aspect, only one form of the Lord, in that too only one particular posture or still better to focus on any one part of the image of the Lord is recommended. All this is to narrow down the field of concentration to a finer point. It is a great joy to sing Kirtan, but singing or repeating one Name continuously is most efficacious. If the meaning of Kirtan is not understood, the mind has no Bhava. To get absorbed merely in Raga and Taala of Kirtan is pointless for a seeker. Repetition of a single Name continuously is at once Dhyana, Yoga, Tapas and also illumination.

Of all the methods, taking the Name is the simplest. Chanting God’s Name is the only practice recommended in scriptures for Kali Yuga.

Excerpts from “GLORY OF THE NAME” by Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Once we are born, death is a certainty, but the time of our death does not follow any seniority. However, the truth is, we exist now. If a Jeeva fails to make use of its present life to attain liberation, it has to continue to revolve in the cycle of birth and death. The cause of birth is the Vasanas or mental impressions which are a mixture of Satva, Rajas and Tamas and these remain even after the death of the body. Liberation necessitates exhausting of the Vasanas. Just as the wind carries the fragrance or stench of the things with which it comes in contact; so also the dormant Vasanas get activated and stimulate the respective sense responses when we breathe.

There are many ways like Dhyana, Yoga, Brahma-Vichara to control the mind and destroy the Vasanas. Of all the methods, taking the Name is the simplest. Chanting God’s Name is the only practice recommended in scriptures for Kali Yuga. Srimad Bhagavatam assures that the fruit of Tapas, Yoga and Dhyana can be attained by repeating the Name of God. Mahatmas avow that Nama chanting by itself can lead one directly to liberation.

Having compassion of the Lord as the foundation, the one which has no rules, the one which can eradicate the force of Kali, Namakirtanam is the only resort.

It is impossible for anyone to do continuous Dhyana, Yoga or Brahma-Vichara or to observe austerities like fasting or vigil. But the Name can be chanted continuously even if it is mechanical.

Therefore, just as we bathe, wear clothes, eat food, etc. whether our mind is involved in it or not, so too, should we do a certain amount of Năma japa, părayana, kirtana, vandanam every day

Mechanical chanting is the only starting point we can attempt. It matures to love by grace.

Mechanical chanting is the starting phase. It will soon graduate to mental chanting and soon this mental one-pointed chanting will lead to the source of the chant, which is the truth.

Those who chant the Mahamantra even once in this Kali Yuga are assured of 'Moksha' (liberation)

Nama Kirtan, whether done knowingly or unknowingly, certainly has to give its effect

Nama Chanted unknowingly also wipes out all of one's sins

Japa even once uttered has its own good effect, whether the individual is aware or not.

The same scriptures also state that one should follow the words of the Guru without any doubts or questions and act accordingly.

Is chanting while doing work considered as meaningful chanting ?

Don’t stop chanting for any reason. The rest of the things will be taken care of automatically.

Chant the Mahamantra Nama kirtan :

Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

There is no pleasure as sweet as His name; all the scriptures declare that it’s the secret to be attained. So do not spend even a moment without enjoying the nectar of His name.

There is no pleasure as sweet as His name; all the scriptures declare that it’s the secret to be attained. So do not spend even a moment without enjoying the nectar of His name. This world is only a superficial play; it is only an imagination, after all. Without the remembrance of Hari, it’s only a futile round of births and deaths. By remembering His name, all your sins will go up in flames; therefore, commit your mind to chanting Hari’s name.

Take the attitude of adherence to Truth, and break the spell of illusion. Do not allow the senses to bar your vision of the Self; Have faith in the power of chanting His name. Be kind, serene and compassionate toward all; in this way, You’ll become the welcome guest of the Lord.

Jnanadev says: The chanting of God’s name is the means to Samadhi; This, I swear, is true. This wisdom was bestowed upon me By Nivrittinath, my Guru.
