But the ambrosia of God’s name knows no such limit. The deeper one drinks of it, the more the thirst for it grows, but it must sink deep into the heart.

Commenting upon Mirabai's song which was sung at the prayer, Gandhiji said that in that song the devotee asks the soul to drink deep of the nectar of God's name. Physical food and drink result in satiety, and, if over-indulged, in illness.

But the ambrosia of God's name knows no such limit. The deeper one drinks of it, the more the thirst for it grows, but it must sink deep into the heart. When that happens, all delusion and attachment, lust and envy, fall off from us. Only one must persevere and have patience. Success is the inevitable result of such effort.

As your heart beats as you sleep, dream or being awake let your tongue always Chant the Divine Names of Hari.

Hereafter, the Divine Name Rama is my only companion, nothing else.

I have found, yes, I have found the wealth of the “Divine Name – Rama” the gem; My true guru gave me a priceless thing.

Drink the nectar of the Divine Name Rama and always sit among righteous company….

The  one,  whom all the riches of the three worlds cannot distract from the remembrance of the Lord's  lotus feet even for half a second, is the foremost of  all the vaishanavas.

Though he has performed such regnant (mighty) tasks, he hasn't diverged himself from uttering the Rama Nama even for a split of a second.

One should constantly repeat the names of God irrespective of any activity that he might be involved in.

Remembering the Hare Rama Maha mantra always is Punya (Virtue), Forgetting Hare Rama Maha Mantra is sin.

If you become that anxious on forgetting to chant the Divine Name even for a second, then you are blessed.

To take Ramanama from the heart means deriving help from an incomparable power.

Nama Article 3rd October 2013

I have said that to take Ramanama from the heart means deriving help from an incomparable power. The atom bomb is as nothing compared with it. This power is capable of removing all pain. It must, however, be admitted that it is easy to say that Ramanama must come from the heart, but to attain the reality is very difficult. Nevertheless, it is the biggest thing man can possess.

Wish you all Happy Rama Navami ! What's the shortest mantra of the Almighty? – "Rama"

All I know is Ram Nam. For him there is no need for realisation, visions, experiences, or anything else. Ram Nam is everything.

When one chants Rama Nama, then where is the question of rebirth?

Repeated chanting of the Name of Răma enhances prosperity! — sweetens the tongue, too! it purifies all – from the common man to the scholar!

Rama Nama is the very essence (‘saram’) of all Epics, Shastras and the Vedas

Is it enough if I do not try to assimilate Rama's qualities but just surrender to Him?

Only a pious devotee can acquire Prema Bhakthi through simple devotional acts like Chanting of the Divine Name of Shri Rama

There is nothing special about this bhajan by Tulsidas. He only says that he lives by two syllables (Namely, Ra and ma).

SPEECH AT PRAYER MEETING, April 27, 1947

और नहीं कछु कामके

मैं भरोसे अपने रामके

दोउ अक्षर सब कुल तारे

वारी जाउं उस नामपे

तुलसिदास प्रभु राम दयाधन

और देव सब दामके

The bhajan you heard just now was sung before also. I want to give you something of the background of this bhajan. It first echoed in my ears when I went on a fast while in jail. But while fasting one’s memory becomes weak. None of my co-workers remembered the bhajan fully either. And so I sent a telegram and the bhajan was sent to me telegraphically in the Roman script. The bhajan delighted me so much that I forgot my fast. My grandson Kanu was with me at the time. At my request he sang it for me. There is nothing special about this bhajan by Tulsidas. He only says that he lives by two syllables (Namely, Ra and ma). Everything, he says, is accomplished only with the help of Rama. All other gods are amenable to offerings. For, when people go to worship the deities they offer a couple of pice before offering their prayers. The mother of a sick child offers a little money before praying for the recovery of her child. Another woman offers money to Lord Mahadeva pleading to be spared the nightmares she goes through. Some other woman who has too many daughters prays for a son. But all this is futile. Tulsidas says that God needs no flattery.

But in telling you to repeat the Name of Ram, I am giving you a name worshipped since countless generations by the people of this land – a Name familiar to the very animals and birds, the very trees and stones of Hindustan through many thousand years.

Nama Article 16th May 2013

RAM NAM, By Mahatma Gandhi

You must learn to take the Name of Ram with full devotion and faith.

When you study the Ramayan, you will learn from Tulsidas the divine power of that blessed Name.

You might ask me why I tell you to use the word and not one of the many other Names of the Creator. True His Names are as many as and more than the leaves on a tree, and I might, for instance, ask you to use the word God. But what meaning, what associations would it have for you here? In order to enable you to feel anything when repeating the word God, I should have to teach you some English. I should have to explain to you the foreign peoples' thoughts and associations.

But in telling you to repeat the Name of Ram, I am giving you a name worshipped since countless generations by the people of this land – a Name familiar to the very animals and birds, the very trees and stones of Hindustan through many thousand years.

You know the story of Ahalya? No, I see you don't. But you will soon learn it when you study the Ramayan – learn how a stone by the road-side sprung to life at the touch of Ram's foot as he passed by. You must learn to repeat the blessed Name of Ram with such sweetness and such devotion that the birds will pause in their singing to listen to you – that the very trees will bend their leaves towards you, stirred by the divine melody of that Name.

And when you are able to do this, I tell you I will come all the way on foot from Bombay, as on a pilgrimage, to hear you. In His sweet Name lies a power which can cure all our ills.

A SURE AID

There is no doubt that Rama Nama is the surest aid. If recited from the heart, it charms away every evil thought; and evil thought gone, no corresponding action is possible.

The outward helps are all useless if the mind is weak. They are superfluous if the mind is pure. This must not be taken to mean that a pure-minded man can take all the liberties and still keep safe. Such a man simply will not take any liberties with himself. His whole life will be an infallible testimony to the inward purity. The Gita truly says that mind makes the man and unmakes him. Milton paraphrases the same thought when he says: “The mind in its own place, and in itself can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven.”

There is nothing better than prayer to rid ourselves of bad traits and purify our hearts. Without prayer there will be no peace of mind.

Nama Article 28th December 2012

Mahathma Gandhi

Prayer is not mere uttering of some words. It is the performance of good deeds that will yield good results. Repeating the Lord’s Name only at the time of prayer and forgetting Him after that does not amount to true prayer. It is like insulting Him. Those who do not have the unshakable faith that God resides within, cannot do prayer. If we keep praying for the purification of our heart, we will get progressively purified day by day.

Prayer is not only the means to ultimate Liberation, but also liberation in this world. When we are blessed with something bigger, we automatically get those which are smaller. Prayer is the great love that the soul has for the One which is a complete whole. That is the tool for the spiritual evolution of the soul. If we are determined to keep our hearts pure, God will not ignore our prayers. When a community prayer is held, a divine force flows from one to the other even without our knowing it, and this helps in the spiritual evolution of the soul. God does not listen to the prayers of those who are arrogant and those who indulge in prayer as a commercial quid pro quo.

There is nothing better than prayer to rid ourselves of bad traits and purify our hearts. Without prayer there will be no peace of mind. I have never lost my peace of mind even when I was assailed by any number of failures in my political life. There were many who had envied me for that. I was able to get that peace through prayer. For real prayer, there is no religious or caste distinction. Prayer seeks the good of the entire human race. If that happens, the kingdom of God will be on this earth.

What is prayer?

Believe in simple prayers

Conversing with God in a personal manner is prayer in itself. Thanking God for all the good things He has given you is prayer in itself. Singing His Divine Name is prayer in itself.

In the same way, God is sought for obtaining job, for marriage, for begetting a child, for education, for wealth and various other reasons. But, if we bring God Himself to our homes, we will get everything that we need.

The man of prayer will be at peace with himself, and with the whole world

Chanting lips make many hands work

Prayer gives us a pure heart and a pure heart can do much

Repeating a demand or prayer over and over again, mentally or orally, and with deepening attention and devotion, spiritualizes the prayer

What is the power of practising prayers, how it can transform a person and why a devotee is dear to Lord Krishna ?

You are never so poor that you cannot do anything for others

By God’s grace and power everything is possible, if our prayers are really sincere.

When I was crossing into Gaza, I was asked at the checkpost whether I was carrying any weapons. I replied: Oh yes, my prayer books
