Talk 482.

Devotee.: Quite true. I see the force of the words. But yet are not mantras, etc., helpful?

BHAGAWAN RAMANA MAHARISHI.: They are helpful. What is mantra? You are thinking of the simple sounds of the mantra. Repetition of the same excludes all other thoughts. The single thought of the mantra japa remains.

That too drops away giving place to the Infinite Self, which is the mantra itself.

Mantra, dhyana, bhakti, etc., are all aids and finally lead to Swarupa, the Self, which is they themselves.

Nama Article 9th June 2012

My mother does not like me visiting temples or coming to the Satsang. But shastras ordain that the mother has to be regarded as God and that one should abide by her words. What do I do?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

As per the shastras a child has to obey the parents and abide by their words. Similarly, as per the shastras a wife has to abide by the words of her husband. In all worldly matters one has to abide by their words. However, if any one of them advices against spiritual matters it need not be followed.

Bharata did not accept the kingdom that Kaikeyi had got for his sake because it was against Lord Rama. When Hiranykashipu asked Prahlada to drink poison, he did so happily. Prahlada obeyed him in all matters except when he was told not to utter Bhagavannaama (Lord’s Name). So was Meera. She obeyed her husband Rana Kumbha in all matters. But she did not obey only when she was told not to do Krishna Bhakti. But God has indeed showered grace on all of them. Therefore, it is not obligatory to listen to anybody’s advice against God.

Realization is the result of the Master’s (Guru’s) grace, more than teachings, lectures, meditations, etc

Realization is the result of the Master’s (Guru’s) grace, more than teachings, lectures, meditations, etc.

They are only secondary aids, whereas the former is the primary and essential cause.

The same God whom he was worshipping comes as Guru and leads him onward.

Gems from Bhagavan – A Necklace Of Sayings By Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi

I HAVE NOT SAID THAT A GURU IS NOT NECESSARY. But a Guru need not always be in human form. First a person thinks that he is inferior and that there is a superior, allknowing, all powerful God who controls his own and the world’s destiny and worships him or does bhakti.

When he reaches a certain stage and becomes fit for enlightenment, the same God whom he was worshipping comes as Guru and leads him onward. That Guru comes only to tell him, ‘That God is within yourself. Dive within and realize’. God, Guru and the Self are the same.

I am not familiar with anyone here. I have never spoken to anyone here in all these years of my visit to Sri Ramanasramam. Nobody has bothered me. How can these people know that I am from Chennai………………….

Those who have come within the ambit of the Guru’s gracious look will be saved by the Guru and will not get lost.

Gems from Bhagavan – A Necklace Of Sayings By Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi

In truth, God and the Guru are not different. Just as the prey which has fallen into the jaws of a tiger has no escape, so those who have come within the ambit of the Guru’s gracious look will be saved by the Guru and will not get lost.
