The words that a saint or a sage utters are not empty sounds that he makes. They are forces that are released like atom bombs; they can manifest themselves in the physical world and events can take place

Nama Article 7th June 2013

Excerpts from Japa Sadhana – by Swami Krishnananda direct disciple of His Holiness Swami Sivananda

The Name of God, especially when it is given to us in the form of what is known as a mantra, is a power by itself. It has a shakti of its own, and this is the reason why bhaktas, sages and saints have told us that even a mere repetition of the Name of God has the capacity to produce an effect of its own, though we may not be really meditating, though we may not be in a position to contemplate the actual meaning hidden behind it. The mantra-shakti, or the power of the mantra, arises on account of the fact that is beautifully and scientifically described in a science known as mantra-shastra, which is akin to the science of chemistry in our own ordinary life. Chemical elements act and react upon each other. We know the action between acid and alkali, for instance. Different chemical combinations are supposed to produce different effects. Sometimes the chemical reaction is such that it can produce a tremendous effect. Mantras produce such effect, similar to the reaction of chemical elements, because of the peculiar combination of letters. The mantra-shastra is a secret which tells us that every letter of the alphabet is a condensed form of energy. Sounds are really energy manifest. The sound is not merely an empty form of verbal manifestation, but energy that is made to express itself in a particular shape. And this packet of energy, this tied up form of force, which is a particular letter of the alphabet, is made to come in contact with another packet of energy called another letter. They collide with each other, or, we may say, they act upon each other or fuse into each other – whatever be the process that takes place there – so that the utterance of a group of letters, which is the mantra, produces, by the process of permutation and combination of these letters, a new form of energy which gets infused into our system because it has arisen from our own mind, thought and the recesses of our being. We get charged with that force, as if we have touched a live electric wire. There is special name given to this science; it is gana-shastra, in tantrik parlance. Words are forces, thoughts are things, so they tell us. Words are not empty sounds that we make when we speak or utter a name or give expression to an idea. It is because of the fact that thoughts and expressions are powers by themselves that the words of saints take immediate effect. The words that a saint or a sage utters are not empty sounds that he makes. They are forces that are released like atom bombs; they can manifest themselves in the physical world and events can take place. That is why people go to a Mahatma for ashirvada, or blessings. His words are forces, power that he releases to take immediate effect, or even a remote effect, as the case may be.

Such is the power of the Divine Name!

Nama Article 25th April 2013

Sri Swami Chidananda, disciple  of Sri Swami Sivananda

The Bavarian mystic, Jakob Bohme, said about the indescribable power of the Lord’s Divine Name: “If you have sinned in your olden days—before taking to the spiritual life and dedicating yourself to chanting of the Lord’s Name and these sins drive you to hell, then the power of the Lord’s Name will enter into hell and break hell to pieces in order to liberate you.” Such is the power of the Divine Name!

Prayers for rains answered

There were several fervent prayer requests to HH Maharanyam Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji for rains from all parts of Tamilnadu following deficient rainfalls in the past one year. Sri Swamiji ordained during mid-January that Akanda Mahamantra Kirtan for 7 days (Nama Sapthaham) be organized from 13th Feb to 19th Feb 2013 in all Namadwaars and GOD satsangs across India to chant with a specific prayer request by all participants on each day for bountiful rains in Tamil Nadu.

All Namadwaars and several GOD satsangs in various districts enthusiastically organized the Nama Sapthaham and started praying fervently for the common cause of bountiful rains and prosperity. In the first two days of 13th and 14th there were reports of rains in various districts and towns of Tamilnadu like Tuticorin, Virudhunagar, Aruppukottai, Kovilpatti, Tiruvannamalai, Sivakasi, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Tiruthuraipundi, Madurai, Theni, Vathalagundu, Periyakulam, Cumbam etc. During the 15th to 17th, there were bountiful rains in Vellore, Mangalur, Ambur, Gudiyatham, Katpadi, Chennai etc. Water levels in major dams in Tamilnadu were on the rise including Manimuthar dam, Mettur dam etc following good rains in the catchment areas. There was record rainfall of close to 300 mm across Tamilnadu in the past 5 days from 13th to 17th Feb 2013 which was very useful for standing crops and drinking water requirements.

Wishes of gratitude are flowing in from people of all walks of life for the timely prayers which yielded immediate results. Namadwaar prays with folded hands to the Holy feet of our beloved Sri Swamiji for making this happen and continues to pray for good rains in the forthcoming days.

An incident that clearly depicts the power of prayers, specifically the power of prayers with Mahamantra  – Australia has faced the worst drought of the century – CNN reports on April 19, 2007

Prayers are Always Answered: The Texas Drought Story

சத்தமில்லாமல் நாமகீர்த்தனம் ஒரு மாபெரும் சமூக நன்மையை அல்லவா தந்து வருகிறது

There were heavy rains on all the three days of chanting. The people of that place were very happy about this

Extraordinarily powerful are sincere prayers with love and devotion to that Lord Almighty supplemented with the Divine Name of God – the Mahamantra

What is prayer?

Selfless prayer is a penance by itself

Constant Satsang with devotees, repetition of the Lord’s name, constant remembrance of Him, prayer, study of religious books can infuse Bhakti in your heart

Nama Article 3rd January 2013

BHAKTI YOGA, By Swami Sivananda

Bhakti can be acquired and cultivated. Constant Satsang with devotees, repetition of the Lord’s name, constant remembrance of Him, prayer, study of religious books such as Ramayana, Bhagavata, the Gita etc, singing praises of the Lord and service of Saints – all these can infuse Bhakti in your heart

Please check these: Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Only in the company of Sadhus is 'premai' experienced in one's heart.

So also when an ignorant, bound and sorrow-stricken soul comes in contact with an illumined, liberated and all-blissful person, the former by such contact is fired with a zeal to become also like the latter.

To associate oneself in Satsang (being in the company of Holy persons) brings detachment towards worldly pursuits. Chant the Divine Name Govinda

The intention of continued chanting of the Divine names is to take one to the state of total selfless, unconditional LOVE

I can worship God, but how can I love LORD KRISHNA? You can love Him if you understand that Sri Krishna is pure love and love alone.

Mechanical chanting is the only starting point we can attempt. It matures to love by grace.

THE JNAANA (KNOWLEDGE) BORN OUT OF GRACE, THE VIDWAT (LEARNING) BORN OF THIS GRACE, WEALTH RECEIVED FROM SUCH A GRACE IS EVERLASTING AND SAFE (HARMLESS).

God gives whatever is required (by His devotee), removes whatever is not needed, leads the devotee in the path suited to him/her; Since Bhagavãn takes utmost interest in the devotee's needs the latter will not earn/attain any 'siddhi'

What is there in this world that devotion to the Lord cannot do?

By repeatedly chanting the Divine Name of Lord Hari, one attains all siddhis (powers). When Lord, the Consort of Goddess Shridevi, and the Lord of the world, is pleased, what remains an impossibility on this earth?

Repetition of Name will create Love. Hari will be yours when you attain Love

‘Similarly, my friend,’ the master says, ‘you can sit like that forever, but you’ll never be meditating or understanding truth.’

Chant the Mahamantra Nama kirtan :

Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Source: Guru Nanak By Sri Swami Sivananda

Babar offered valuable presents to Nanak. Nanak, having declined them, asked Babar to release the captives of Eminabad and restore their properties. Babar at once carried out the wishes of Guru Nanak and implored Guru Nanak to give him some religious instructions. Guru Nanak said, "Worship God. Repeat His Name. Give up wine and gambling. Be just. Revere saints and pious men. Be kind to all. Be merciful towards the vanquished".
